Roca Mines Inc. Appoints Senior Advisor

| | Vancouver, British Columbia, January 7, 2003: Roca Mines Inc. (ROK:TSX.V) is very pleased to announce the appointment of Mr. John F. Baker as Senior Advisor to the Company. Mr. Baker is a geologist with over 38 years of experience in the minerals exploration industry.
Mr. Baker has extensive exploration experience, much of which was gained as a Regional Manager for Canadian Superior Exploration Ltd., directing all aspects of a large exploration effort in British Columbia during the 1970's and 80's. At various times, he was also responsible for significant exploration programs conducted in Ireland and Alaska, in addition to work in Nevada and Mexico. He has experience on a wide variety of mineral deposit types, including; volcanogenic massive sulphide (VMS), sedimentary exhalative (SEDEX), skarns, various porphyry types, epithermal gold/silver and mesothermal deposits.
From 1980 to 1997, Mr. Baker was General Manager of JT Thomas Drilling Ltd., a successful international contract drilling company. Mr. Baker was instrumental in managing the company's growth from an initial two-rig operation to a company with over 35-rigs operating in BC, Yukon, NWT, Ontario, Quebec, Alaska, Mexico and Costa Rica. During his time with JT Thomas, he was also directly involved in various project financings, property acquisitions, and exploration programs.
The JT Thomas operations were ultimately acquired by Major Drilling Group International Inc. in 1997 for C$13,500,000. Mr. Baker is credited with significantly building the business and creating unique recognition for it within the Mining Industry. He directed the technical, financial, and management aspects of the company and provided innovative corporate development during his tenure. Mr. Baker continued to act as General Manager of the Smithers based business unit for Major Drilling until 1999.
Mr. Baker will be paid a consulting fee for his services and will be granted 150,000 options exercisable for a period of five years at an exercise price of $0.35 per share. He brings a wealth of expertise, commitment and integrity to the Company and we are very pleased to welcome Mr. Baker to the Roca team.
